Educational Psychology or teacher?

Laura asked:

I have a 7 month old and soon to be the mother of a second baby. I have a bachelors from Devry U. I have been working as an IT person since 2000. I wanted to change my career to Education. Not sure if I should go in to Education Psychology or be a teacher. I am very interested on the human development and the anatomy of the brain. I have an certificate of completion as a surgical tech and that is where my medicine interest goes as well. Overall, I will like to be able to have options when I choose as career. If I become and educational psychologist and decided to teach down the line, would I be able to do that without risking a steady high pay and not going to school any longer? I know EP does not get pay very well, but if you know otherwise pls let me know. I have already research Cal states around my area and all of my credits are transferable. Is it better to be a teacher instead? Why? Where is the highest pay, more options in a career and less stress in EP, teacher? I hope this is not asking for too much if you are en EP, teacher and let me know how you like it.

FYI, i am thinking of getting a masters in EP or Teaching
Thanks a bunch!

I do not believe that EP’s get paid less than teachers..In WI anyway, school psych’s are in charge of testing students, doing IEP re-evaluations, etc. Special education teachers, teach the students, and write IEP’s, and do a lot of testing.
I think both jobs are rewarding and challenging..If you are going into the education field, I would not let $$ be a factor, it’s the lowest paid field around. I chose it because I love the work and rewards of seeing the students progress, plus being in education allwos me more time with my own children.

Sounds like you’re more concern about the salary than what you can gain in your career. It’s better to have a passion in what you do or you’ll end up feeling unhappy at work. It takes a lot of dedication and patience to be a good teacher. Unless you’re prepare to do all that, you shouldn’t even bother to pursue that path.
